Socialism, stripped to its core, is a system in which the government seizes ownership and control of the means of production - factories, farms, businesses, and capital - and runs them as a single public enterprise. In place of private companies vying for customers, it installs one giant government monopoly. Competition is deliberately replaced by Monopoly, and that single change rewrites the entire economic game. This is exactly what Democrat Socialists of America are calling for - they are not shy about it. They plan to start with Medicare for All, which is just another label for SOCIALIZED MEDICINE. - Btw, 115 (out of 212) U.S. House Democrats cosponsored the Medicare for All Act (H.R. 3069) in 2025.
Competition is the engine that keeps producers motivated. Suppose Company A makes vacuum cleaners that are more expensive and of lower quality than Company B. Consumers soon figure this out. Soon, nobody buys vacuum cleaners from Company A, and everybody buys from Company B. Company A either cleans up its act or it goes out of business. Maybe A even surpasses Company B and then it’s up to B to do better. As a result of this competition, both companies become more effective and more efficient. Innovation accelerates, costs drop, quality rises, and the customer wins.
Now picture the government stepping in, seizing every factory, and declaring itself the only vacuum cleaner maker in the country. That’s a monopoly by design - the exact setup socialism demands. With no rival breathing down its neck, the state provider has almost zero incentive to deliver quality at a competitive price. Gifted workers have no outlet for their talents and, out of frustration, turn to vodka. Innovation stalls. Lazy and incompetent workers stay protected; there’s no market pressure to fire them or demand better. Efficiency evaporates. Why bother inventing a better vacuum cleaner or streamlining production when customers have nowhere else to go?
Now, extrapolate my vacuum cleaner example to the economy as a whole. The entire U.S. Economy tanks because the whole system stops getting sharper and starts getting slower and more wasteful. The customer - every ordinary U.S. Citizen - gets screwed with shortages, lousy products/ services, and rising real costs.
Socialism doesn’t stop at vacuum cleaners. It requires the nationalization of private property - the forced takeover of businesses, factories, farms, and capital. Nationalization is just confiscation with a nicer label, and confiscation, by definition, means coercion: men with guns, threats, penalties, and the power to take what people have built. To keep the government monopoly intact and the complaints quiet, the state has to concentrate more and more power. Coercion and monopoly power fit together like a hand in a glove with AUTHORITARIAN government. You criticize the new economic system? You might very well find yourself with a one-way ticket to the gulag. Keep in mind, the D.S.A. wants to end the Senate, the Presidency, and the Electoral College (all pillars of the U.S. Constitution). Would the First Amendment (and, of course, the Second Amendment) be that far behind?
And here’s the final irony: socialism claims to deliver economic equality, yet it fails that test in spectacular fashion. The masses don’t get richer. Rather, they get much poorer. I do encourage you to read up on Venezuela - it went from being one of the richest South American countries to the poorest after the (what started off as gradual) implementation of socialism. The productive business leaders (e.g., Elon Musk) are simply replaced by whoever sits at the top of the government hierarchy (e.g., Stalin, Castro, Kim Jong-Un, Maduro, AOC?). The inequality doesn’t disappear; it just changes uniforms. Ordinary people end up with less, while the new political “elite” live large. Competition serves the customer. Monopoly serves the monopolist. Socialism brings monopoly - and pays for it with coercion, economic stagnation, and broken promises.
Keep in mind that seizing the means of production is often just the prelude to government seizing everything. New York City Democrat Mayor Zohran Mamdani is jumping ahead - looking for NYC government to seize total control (and, in my humble opinion, eventual total ownership) of the New York City residential housing market. The eventual endgame of onerous taxation and regulation is for NYC landlords and even individual NYC homeowners to sell their property at fire sale prices. Eventually the only “buyer” will be the government itself.
As a final note, U.S. K-12 education is a great example of socialism at work. The government has a monopoly on free (aka taxpayer-funded) K-12 education. Each year we pay more and more for less and less. Math and reading skills continue to deteriorate. Not only that, we get (teachers’ union generated) leftist indoctrination of our children. Why else do you think this socialism nonsense has taken hold primarily among our nation’s young folks? - For more on my proposal to fix public education, see pages 176-178.
